Buy the remaining supported life
The age of a device and the age of its design are different. A discounted or refurbished model may have much less official support remaining than its physical condition suggests, while hardware service, operating-system updates and application compatibility can end on different dates.
Find the exact model or platform release date, then record the manufacturer’s current operating-system, security, firmware and parts commitments from dated official sources. Check essential application requirements separately and calculate support remaining from the purchase date, not from the model’s launch marketing.
Check the complete support stack
Operating system
Can the exact device install a version that is currently supported, and when will that version stop receiving normal updates?
Security and firmware
Does the manufacturer state an end date for security patches and device firmware, and do updates depend on a network provider or reseller?
Applications
What operating-system versions do essential banking, identity, work, school, accessibility or specialist applications require?
Parts and repair
How long will batteries, displays, keyboards, storage, chargers and qualified repair remain available in the user’s country?
Accessories and services
Will docks, peripherals, mobile bands, cloud features, account sign-in and management tools remain compatible?

Save the official page, exact model, date checked and any conditions. Policies and eligibility lists change.
Current examples show why the exact model matters
| Platform example at 17 July 2026 | What the official source says | Buying lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel | Google’s Pixel support page states that Pixel 8 and later models receive seven years of operating-system and security updates from first US Google Store availability; earlier Pixel groups have different periods. | Use the exact model and original availability date. Do not apply the newest promise to every used Pixel. |
| ChromeOS | Google’s Chromebook update guide states ten years of automatic updates, while some older eligible devices require an extended-update choice that can remove Android-app support. | Check the model-specific automatic-update date and any extended-support trade-off. |
| Windows | Microsoft states that Windows 10 version 22H2 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. Windows 11 eligibility and version servicing dates are separate checks. | A working Windows 10 PC is not automatically a supported PC. Confirm Windows 11 compatibility and the installed edition. |
| Apple hardware service | Apple’s service page describes parts and service for at least five years after last distribution, potentially longer subject to law and parts, and separate vintage and obsolete categories. | Hardware-service status is not a fixed operating-system support promise. Check current security releases and application compatibility separately. |
Use a support-life record before paying
- Exact model, model year and regional variant
- Original platform or first-sale date where policy uses it
- Guaranteed security-update end date
- Operating-system versions currently eligible
- Essential app minimum versions
- Firmware and driver update route
- Battery and critical-parts availability
- Remaining years from purchase, not launch
EU baseline for newer smartphones and tablets
The European Commission states that relevant new smartphones and slate tablets placed on the EU market from 20 June 2025 must have operating-system updates available for at least five years from the date the final unit of the model is placed on the market. This is a legal baseline for covered products, not proof that every device worldwide has the same period or that every application will remain compatible.
Software and security support FAQs
Does a security-update promise include new features?
Not necessarily. Security fixes, operating-system version upgrades, feature releases, application support and hardware service are different commitments. Read exactly what the manufacturer promises for the model.
Can an unsupported computer be made safe with antivirus?
Antivirus can reduce some risks but cannot replace missing operating-system, browser, firmware or application security fixes. Move sensitive and important activity to supported equipment and seek specialist advice for any tightly controlled legacy use.
Why does a refurbished device need a support check?
Its warranty may cover hardware failure while official software or application support has little time remaining. Calculate supported life from the original model schedule, not the refurbishment date.
